Here’s
a film you probably sneered at as its ads played for its mega-plex
roll out. I beg you not to let you keep that from now buying the
DVD. Because, frankly, Australia is a sweeping romantic
action historical epic. American audiences probably disregarded
the Baz Luhrmann film as the history of Australia. Shame. It is
based in the growing outback during the WWII, but this is no documentary.
It's more Gone With The Wind then Ken Burns play. Heck
look who directed it - 'nough said?
The
story goes…Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) decides her
long away husband needs a good reeling in. The lass is pinkies
upping around the estate when she decides his gallivanting over
in that filthy Australia must end.
He
has been over there hoping to train the outback and be a huge
area rancher in the Northern Territory…
When
Lady Sarah arrives in port it is immediately obvious this is one
of the corset set that’s firmly found another planet. But
you sense there's more behind those perfectly manicured eyebrows
then crumpet testing skills.
We
also are introduced to her husband’s ranch hand Drover (Hugh
Jackman). He’s wildly wild. Drover is a through back to
leading men found sexing up screens in the old days.He is tougher
than bear grizzle with a soft mélange of a heart –
once you penetrate its plutonium core. He's swell on the eyes too.
Sure,
you know the two will probably somehow end up together…but
the trip is often awe inspiring. Do not – for a moment –
dismiss Australia as a corny love story. It is a sweeping epic
that both sexes can relish.
Nicole Kidman, you might have forgotten, is a real actress. With
Lurman behind the scene she always shines. Here is no exception.
Now
let us breath in and take a moment to fawn over Hugh Jackman.
This man is simply beautiful. If you found him irresistible as
Wolverine, you may need smelling salts to view Australia.
And,
for me, oddly enough, when he is “cleaned” up his
sex appeal plummets. But lucky for all, as Drover he’s sporting
a permanent five-o’clock shadow, weathered tight-fitting
cowboy gear, and hat head. It’s as manly man bordering-on-soft-porn-in-
effect as a gal could hope for in a family friendly film.
Endorphin-related
sighing aside, Jackman also exudes talent. You have seen him singing
and dancing right? This tall yumsicle is a rare serving of grade
A talent.
The
real star of the film is Brandon Walters. He plays Nullah, a “creamy”
lad that is hanging around—ranch. He will capture your heart
and the performance will have you in tears and giddy glee more
than twice.
Australia
is stunning. The immense crew Luhrmann orchestrates behind the
scenes make every frame sparkle. The story is remarkable, the
shots gorgeous, and the characters enthralling – even if
you sometimes wish you had a subtitle running due to the heavy
Australian accents. But you’ll have the DVD you can rewind.
The film is long, but so good you won’t even notice.
Snack
recommendation: Kiwi fruit salad and a tic-tac; Kidman’s
impeccable figure will shame you away from any carb cravings!
