Them Bluntly
speaking? Today words like incredible and genius are thrown around like Paris
Hilton to describe the mundanist of talents (ie: a starlet de Jour who managed
a semester of Liberal Arts at a community college...). However, once in a blue-tinged
moon the words are actually an understatement of their dictionary description
when conjured up to describe a singular entity among us.
Such is the case with executive transvestite avante garde rambler comedian extraordinaire,
Eddie Izzard (pronounced IZ -pregnant pause- ZARD). Edward's brain is incredible
- but not in that smug intellectual old-farty above-the-Joe Q Public's style of
say that condescending republican snorting puke Dennis Miller. No. Eddie's more
of a really cute (if strange) guy you've met at the local pub, who's got a mesmerizing
ambience about him, mixed neatly with a hearty helping of razor sharp genuis-y
wit. And he spins his conversational yarns with a nice pinch of grandiose storytelling,
topped with an edible dollop of pure comedic frosting. So.
Um...yeah.
This newer collection, of older performances, is a superlative zenith of laughter
and I dare say, a positively delicious collection of delicacies of the intellectual
silly sort. The
Bundle has three of Izzard's older one-man shows; 'Glorious' (1997), 'Definite
Article' (1996) and 'Unrepeatable' (1994). Each disc is in its own case - and
each contain a smorgasbord of different bits spotlighting Eddie's unique outlook
on the ordinary - in his realm even getting bread from a quickie mart at two A.M.
can be hilarious. You can literally go from disc to disc watching Eddie's stage
act confidence growing, and his transvestite ensemble getting braver (and prettier).
It's a must for any Izzard fan, and perfect to get up-to-speed before experiencing
the full-Eddie in his uber-genius exhibit upon his 'Dressed to Kill' DVD. The
routines are so plentiful. I'd be hard pressed to highlight
well, okay. There's
something I guess he'd call, "The Blue Underwear Infiltrator" that's
a tad stand-up comic for Eddie but none-the-less tear inducingly funny. And his
diabolically hilarious take on the whole Noah's Ark fiasco, is pure legend. Then
Eddie talks about the dreaded dastardly pear conspiracies, I'm afraid we've all
been victimized by
also for your viewing pleasure: Eddie's miscasting of
Sean Connery and James Mason as all kinds of characters in his charade parades.
You'll be sideways on the floor in a fetal position snorting with maniacal laughter
- and without pharmaceuticals mind you! In fact driving can be an infliction now
when my mind recalls different bits here and there. I just lose functionality
- and not always in the most appropriate of places. But Izzard's worth it. His
work is unique, intelligent, jubilacious mayhem. Each concert has a kind of theme
he expels upon, returns to, and exits into deep space nine from. His bountiful
mind is lightening fast and filled with wonderful melding ideas. He's a one-of-a-kind
talent, and frankly, a comedic treasure.
The dvd extras are slight. There's
Eddie's audio commentary on each, but Eddie basically judges himself - as most
comedians do - and as one would expect, Eddie does not see himself as pristinely
witty as we do... The
'Glorious' DVD a Documentary (tongue-in-cheeky) "Lust for Glorious,"
where Eddie purposely over-acts and gets silly, is strictly for in-love's of the
chap. Otherwise it's tedium squared. But know, Ed's real acting in films like,
n Shadow of a Vampire, Cat's Meow, All The Queen's Men, Mystery
Men and so on is truly "glorious." This
is a must have for any comedian aficionado - and here it's not the DVD extras
that lure you - it's each of Izzard's exquisite shows. What are you still doing
here. Get now - go buy
them. DVD
