PBS has released
a few delightful documentaries in time for the up coming family
gathering! Times are tough, and entertainment is more important
than ever. The titles below offer grand experiences and a chance
to discover – together – some pretty remarkable things…
Building
the Great Cathedrals – In BTGC, the film
makers take us into some of the most beautiful monuments to God
in the world. But, it’s not just a look-see, the film maker
share how the gigantic stone facades and soaring pillars are able
to stand. Many have been around for centuries. The mason’s
vision and handworks are incredible. The repairs to keep these
historic architectural time capsules up are monumental. Gothic
cathedrals can take your breath away with their undying beauty.
When you see how the medieval workers shaped these works of architectural
art houses of worship, the wonder is just intensified. You’d
have to take a dozen far-reaching trips to visit the samples they
share here. And, on a tourist’s dime, you’d never
get this behind-the-scenes. If you even think you like Gothic
buildings, you must treat yourself to this wonderful work. There’s
a bonus in the form of a historic look at that gorgeous glass
that often makes up whole sides of the places. BUY using the Amazon box

SALT
- Talented Photographer, Murray Fredricks, invites us with him
as he heads out on his annual solo soul-feeding journey to Lake
Eyre. The “lake” is in a seriously remote pinch of
Australia’s Southern territory.
It doesn’t
sound like a particularly must-see kind of byline, but you’d
be wrong. This is as elegant and delightful as spending an evening
in the finest art gallery looking at a landscape photographer’s
latest and greatest exhibit.
Oh, make no
mistake, it is a salty tundra we are watching – but as artful
as any national park’s colorful canyons any camera has captured.
In a world of what seems like nothingness and stark dull ebbs,
Fredricks uses video manipulations and time- relapse tricks, the
land jumps up and demands your attentions.
SALT walked
away with a plethora of awards last film festival season. It’s
not hype. This can not be missed. Buy a few and give it away in
the stockings this year! BUY using the Amazon box

Circus
- Who hasn’t at some time, thought the circus would make
a good life plan? The artists and clowns, the foods, and beasts.
Nothing left today is quite as romantic as the world of entertainment
that for the most part, is performed as it was hundreds of years
ago. Here, we meet the families that make up the Big Apple Circus.
For six months
cameras lived among the talent. We get an unprecedented look at
how a circus works. These modern nomads pull up stakes and bring
the circus to town – literally – town by town. But
you also see the people who build and break down the big top,
create the costumes, and choreograph the routines. But, you’ll
discover this tiny city of humans is far from routine. They face
everything “normal” people do, and do it within the
tour confinements of living in trailers that move on down the
road when they have to get to the next gig. Circus is fascinating
and filled with drama and beauty. You’ll want to go to the
circus immediately after viewing though – so be sure to
Google who’s coming to your town.
