it! Writer,
composer and musician, Nathan Larson, has compiled twenty-two tracks of (for the
most part) unreleased music he produced for an eclectic array of Independent and
controversial films from his start in film composing days (1996). The collection
is from titles like, Tigerland, Dirty Pretty Things, High Art and The
Woodsman. It's an odd discombobulated musical snapshot - and quite delightful. There
are an array of musical types; each spotlighting Larson's impeccable abilities.
Track 7, 'Fiction', form Storytelling is quite tinkly, but then a vocal
(and possibly my personal favorite), track 9, 'I Want Someone Badly', from a nonlisted
film - and what he calls, "a new version." It's creepy enough to enthrall,
and melodic enough to captivate. The
great part of this CD is the talent. Seriously. Those who notice the different
musical genres will be giddy with Larson's vast abilities to mix-it-up. For those
who just like music, it's a CD that can be played for weeks and each day, a new
discovery is to be had. Larson handpicked these ditties, and he's definitely a
keeper. Like the films represented here, Nathan has a different , noncommercial,
yet none-the-less important place - artistically If
your allowances allow for only one "soundtrack" or "score"
cd this month, this may be it; in the sense of the immediate montage of musical
tastings hits upon so many areas for maximum audio glee - it's like musical buffet
if you will. And, Larson's "Filmmusik," is anything but film muzak.
