Flip Schultz | Comic
an emily blunt interview

Recently, I got to chat via www with up and coming super comic Flip Schultz...

You haven't heard of him? You will. He's Ed McMahon's Next Big Star Best American Stand-up Comic winner. His representation reps only one other, Mr. George Carlin— that's quite impressive alone. But there's more...With the success of his nightclub act he's produced a second CD of comic hoopla called "Flip Schultz, Ribbed For your Pleasure."

Flip's a nice guy and sure to be a hollywood winner, soon Blunterettes. Well enough rambling intro...here's Flip!

Q1. Flip things are really coming together for you. Life as a standup sounds tough. Is it?

It can be. You're on the road a lot, away from your family and friends. And now that I have moved to the Big Pond of LA, I am living 3,000 miles away from everyone and everything that I know. But it is rewarding to be a standup too, there's really nothing like being on stage and making hundreds of people laugh....as opposed to when I'm in bed and I make just one person laugh.

Q2. Your site www.flipschultz.com is filled with press, funny bits and cd info have you achieved this on your own?

Well, I have had help from people who support me, but all in all, I have been my own publicist. I built and maintain my website myself, and I really enjoy that. The first CD ("Flippin' Through The Channels") I produced myself with the help of friends on the production end. But the second one ("Ribbed For Your Pleasure") is being done through a label (Laugh.com) and, hopefully, will be distributed in stores and on the net. I'm very excited about that.

Q3. Your a super hysterical guy. What do you find funny? Who's your hero (s)?

Well thank you very much, you're quite the little humorist yourself. I try to see humor in everything, but it takes a special kind of humor to make me laugh. For example, I don't care for Def Comedy, not my cup of tea. But people like Jim Carrey, Andy Kaufman, Dave Attell, people who do more than make me laugh, but truely entertain me, that's what I like. Other people who definitely inspire me are Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Weird Al, and a handful of road comics you have probably never heard of.

Q4. Nice list...You have a lot of "down" time as a stand up comic. How do you fill your days?

I lie in bed and dream of you! ;-) Usually, I go to the gym, the movies or just watch TV.

Q5.I always see comics with "their book. " What are you reading now?

"Angela's Ashes" and "Naked Pictures of my Ex-Girlfriends"

Q6 And the last film you saw...Or last film you saw that was actually worth seeing?

"Crouching Tiger.....", thought it was visually groundbreaking. I also have to give props to "O Brother...." and "Snatch".

Q7. (The mansteak has good taste no?) Your in a film with Tim Allen, as well as some other heavy comedy talents, aren't you?

Why yes I am. It is called "Big Trouble" and it's coming out this fall. I play a copilot of a plane where the climax of the movie takes place on. It was really cool, Tim Allen, Zoe Dechannel, Johnny Knoxville and Tom Sizemore is in the scene with me. And Tom hijacks the plane and puts a gun to my head! And at that point I have a funny line! Won't spoil it though.

Q 8. Sizemore makes me have naughty, ungirly thoughts...er, um..How do you start your routine building process? Yoga, drugs, what?

I watch "Grease 2" over and over again until I think I am a masked motorcycle stud. Sorry, just had to throw a "Grease 2" reference in there, loved that flick. Honestly, I just have some water and write out my jokes. That's about it.

Q9.Good, your funny w/o drugs. Cool. I know the readers would like a schedule of dates to see if you've really got the goods...what's the link with the current schedule?

You can go to my site: www.flipschultz.com, and click on the "World Tour" page. My schedule is posted there.

Q10. I peeked...impressive..at your schedule I mean! Any final thoughts? Any words of comic wisdom for any aspiring comics hoping to follow in your footsteps?

It is a long, painful road to semi-stardom, and an even rougher one after that. But if it's in you, then it's worth every ass-kissing, crappy club playing, heckler taking step. It can happen.

Thanks Flip.

Well that's it kiddies. An intimate chat-a-roo with , perhaps, one of America's next big-time comics. He's done his schmoozing, he's paid his dues, and the funny thing is he really does have the talent. Visit his site Flip Schultz .com to see if he's coming to your neck of the woods...before he's too big to approach, or even bother with 'on the road" bullsheet.—Em
