Genius of Britain
Let me begin
by bragging that I always say, “Emily Blunt was proudly
into geeks before it was hip to admit” - Even got a tee-shirt
that says so. Okay, sure, my beaus have never been actual brainiacs…but
in a perfect world, I’d damn the charisma and Armani and
mine the fellow with a high IQ.
This
is why when, Genius of Britain: The Scientists Who Changed
the World, arrived upon my humble doorstep I nearly wept
with joy. A goofy goober you say? Yes, I harrumph! There’s
a bunch of Brits that can run a fast mile with Einstein (adopted
American) and that phone inventor guy with the thousands of patterns…
This British-centric
show is available for the first time in the US – and I suggest
you snag it up. Nothing seems to say too smart more than an eccentric.
Here, there are a plethora of them: Stephen Hawking, Richard Dawkins,
David Attenborough, James Dyson (Yes, the vacuum chap), and so
many more. And these brains chat about other brains and contributions
they’ve all made to the world. Utterly fascinating –
literally – brilliant.
There are episodes
to dig into – I imagine one long documentary would have
made us mere mortals’ brain matter implode with all the
scientific stufamagal heaved upon it. And, the wild serendipitous
moments that would change entire thinkings will bring a broad
smile to your face.
Episodes: The First
Five, A Roomful of Beautiful Minds, The Lights Come On, Out of
the Darkness, and Asking Big Questions.
Oh, but there’s
more to be had in the bonus section: Stephen Hawking and the Theory
of Everything (<- a Pythonesque title no?). Here, the super
genius basically tries to explain the universe…There’s
a booklet, biographies, timelines, articles and much more.
This is a
buffet of thought for your hungry mind, and you may want a tin
of boneless/skinless sardines in olive oil to lube your cranium.
