Perhaps
the most original comedy - or at least the most ridiculously funny
historically semi-accurate comedy spoof - of all time is Monty
Python and the Holy Grail. Some folks just don't get Monty's
humor
When
the package containing the latest version of MPatHG arrived
I ran - literally - and popped it into the player. The
DVD navigated to the menu I perused the gifts within the fancy
schmancy box.
With
this special edition you get a collectable film cell from the
film (how cool is that?) a copy of the original screenplay, a
long detailed "Python-ish" list explaining the double
DVDs' many naughty nuggets; the second disk filled with silly
wonderful stufamagal.
The
film itself is truly reason enough for immediate purchase, but
the DVD has co-directors and Pythonians Terry Gilliam and Terry
Jones commentary on their direction techniques as new baby directors
with no budget, high hopes and a touch of mad genius, as well
as behind the scene info on the whole motley crew. Gilliam shares
historical facts on animal catapults while Jones adds his own
insightful babblings on his desires to rule the world - or on
wanting to do a musical...
As if this were not enough joy and frivolity, Eric Idle, John
Cleese and yummy Michael Palin also have a go at narration - and
it's hilarious. Cleese explains that it was indeed Richard
Burton as the one legged Black Knight
Idle lets you in on
a surprising reoccurring non-Pythonian character that has been
in every film...and Palin exposes the real-life fears of knights.
The
extra bonus disk has delightful sing-a-longs including a Lego
version of The Camelot Knights (a pee inducing short I assure
you), a wonderful 1974 on location segment from the BBC show 'Film
Night', Gilliam's original sketches, a helpful how-to guide on
utterly or udderly enjoying coconuts and some really mundane offerings
that are a tad dull unless you're a true Python fanatic.
The
film, if you have never seen it, is an epic-style medieval-ish
spoof on the whole King Arthur reign with a quest for the holiest
of grail's on God's own request commingled with lots and lots
of mud and glued into a semi-coherent story via Gilliam's delightfully
askew animations. It's best viewed by switching the button within
the narrative section of the brain to "off." Each of
the Python's plays several roles - except dear Graham Chapman
- who is spot on as the noble King Arthur ruler of the Britons.
