Bluntly
speaking? The Incredibles is hilarious! Though a new film, the characters
are so instantly recognizable and comfortable, you'd swear you'd watched them
for years in the wee hours of a Saturday's morn. Story
goes
Bob Parr aka Mr. Incredible was forced into retirement - actually his
retirement was officially required in what is now called The Supers Protective
System. His early out-to-pasture situation was the result of Mr. Incredible saving
the life of a man who did not desire to be saved - so the rescued citizen sued
- as well as all the secondary involved in the usual super hero citywide property
damage such a rescue entails. The lawsuits surrounding his case prompted other
cases against other super heroes. The government, now faced with huge payoffs,
decided it was time to say, "Arrividerci strange folks in tights" Now
he and his wife Helen aka Elasta Girl and their three children, Violet, Dash and
Jack-Jack, live the suburban dream
except for the fact that underneath that
low paying drone-like job and their cozy doily adorned knick knack hutch façade,
the family has incredible (excuse the pun) powers. The mom is basically made of
rubber, the husband is strong and fast, the daughter can make herself invisible
and create impenetrable force fields, the boy can run like the wind, and the baby
does a multitude of odd things including bursting into a flame-ball. While the
family would certainly ace the trophy for first place at the science fair, they
must not show these "talents" if they are to remain a part of society. But,
Bob, unable to resist the urge to do good and right, moonlights doing unsung hero-y
things always silently in the shadows. One
evening, however, his silent do-gooding is spotted by someone who has been searching
for him. But is this someone friend or foe? Whadya think? Dadadum
(<- insert that over-the-top crescendo music in your mind's eye here please)
That's
right. Mr. Incredible is swiftly captured by his arch nemesis (who looks a lot
like the Heatmiser (circa 1972) and Jack Black if you ask me people
).
Incredible has been incredulously retained on a secret tropical island secretly
somewhere - holding all kinds of devilish secrets! It looks like Mr. Incredible
is done for - that is until his family - with their own super powers - come to
the rescue. It's
a cartoon - with a warm and funny story that touches the audience with all its
familiarisms. The quiet disattached teenager, the tough little boy who wants to
be considered a man, relationship and marriage issues that are just compounded
by the fact of all their super hero stuffamagal
not to mention the whole
sue-happy dismissive society we live in. Godfabid you help someone - you could
get sued
and like soldiers, after the initial "thank yous" and
glory, they are cast aside, assimilated into society, and shown no respect for
their past loyal assistance - it can get deep but it is always an original and
delightful family film that doesn't preach while still making its point. See it
immediately! Snack
