Reggie
Perrin: Set 1
Starring Martin Clunes
Martin Clunes stars as Reggie Perrin, a somewhat distanced floating
fellow for whom life has gotten into a bit of a rut. This is a
remake of "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin", which
in its day, the premise may have been new. Here...you'll watch
more of a gray than black comedy.
Reggie works
in razors for a big company – yes, razors, for shaving.
Not exactly rocket science. His days are in and out, and drone
on and on. He starts to notice people around him are not connecting
– and he comments on it. He imagines situations from absurd
to a tad violent. Naturally, it is in his head.
Some of the
one-liners will make you laugh aloud, others lay flat. But, after
the first couple of episodes, you are hoping something good comes
this man’s way. The sad truth is the laughs are either hard
or bare.
Frankly, if
Clunes were not the star, this updated "Perrin" would
probably fail. As it is, the show clearly “works”
because of Clunes’ timing and his character – which
fans have come to expect.
Due to the
rather expected set ups though, Reggie Perrin is hardly
refreshing. It is for Clunes fans. They'll get 12 episodes of
the fine actor here. And, if you enjoy your British comedy served
dry? Again immediately order. If you’re into the absurd?
Like say “How Not to Live Your Life,” skip this entirely.
Reggie Perrin is a tad telegraphed, and breaks no ground in comedy.
Snack
reccomendation: Meat loaf and warm milk.
