Prime Suspect
is fantastic. Many of you may have heard Helen Mirren once played
a strong police detective on British television. She did, and
here it is.
Season One
(here) is a must. It sets up the soon-to-be-popular work, and
the story itself is great. Today women police in charge is somewhat
normal. When this show first aired (in England) it was still very
much a man’s profession.
Detective
Chief Inspector (DCI) Jane Tennison (Mirren) is ready to be upgraded
at work. The chief is not keen on a woman being in charge of his
men. It being 1991 and women just don’t play in the male
reindeer games.
Ultimately
he relents and her first round has her up against a somewhat suave
serial killer (John Bowe)…or is this big brown-eyed fellow
just a victim of the most damming of coincidences? His common-law
wife (Zoe Wanamaker) is almost scarier.
Tall trip-up
tales, mischievous misleads, botched evidence and all, it is when
DCI Tennison uses her woman-power in a few situations to her advantage
that she shows girls can play rough too. These nods to the woman’s
club are never sexual. They just remind viewers this lady can
and will go where men could not tread.
Clever writing
has you guessing at each turn. The story is far from predictable. And,
Helen Mirren tackles the role as a strong career-driven woman
with a wonderful strong simplicity.
Prime Suspect
is brilliant. You will need season one for its character set ups.
Even if you have already seen when it first ran, you should refresh.
This show,
like many before it, is being redone in America. Maria Bello has
succeeded in updating the role; watch it..
Snack
recommendation: Smoked salmon and a baguette –
its’ an easy fix, and you don’t need to waste valuable
viewing time in the kitchen.
