Bluntly
speaking?
Even if you've yet to see Joh Cassavettes' remarkable film,
The Notebook, composer Aaron Zigman (who lends his
piano skills here as well) has strung the film's soundtrack in
such away that his haunting score notes, which sound as if the
heart were desperately trying to tell an important tale, mingle
with a precise selection of perfectly descriptive lifetime-moment
songs performed by the mega-stars of an era. The works unite to
evoke the film's decidedly signature feel.
From
song to song, you're taken through a warm personal journey - audibly.
Notes thick as a southern summer's eve and light as the catfish
jumping about in a spring dawn.
There's
a heaping helping of celli running throughout Zigman's tone, as
well as one of the largest, utilized, violin and viola credits
I've seen in a few months. Love equals strings - we all know that
- but here the strings are attached to particularly fine musicians
found within the Hollywood Studio Symphony and conducted by Jerry
Hey properly.
Along with Zigman's score, as musical producer, he's also chosen
some phenomenal period-songs by heavy American iconic figures,
like Billie Holiday (alone worth the price of the CD) Duke Ellington,
funnyman Jimmy Durante, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman. It's jazz
and frolic dancing about Zigman's compositions all telling a delightful
auditory tale of true love and the abilities of that love.
